Here’s something we can all agree on: The more you prepare your home, the more you will keep it protected from a deadly bush fire. One way to ensure fire safety 24/7 is to install smoke detectors. But apart from having this device, did you know that there are other ways you can contribute to making your home safer?
Here are simple ways to keep your home safe from a bush fire.
-
Remove flammable items surrounding your home.
Remove all combustible materials (dead branches, fallen leaves and cutting long grass) within 20 metres of your home.
-
Spark proof the house.
Prevent sparks and burning objects from coming in through windows, under doors, and floorboards.
-
Use metal roofs.
Metal roofing gives more protection provided it is secured and sealed around vents, skylights, fascias, and roof caps.
-
Make sure underfloor areas are kept clear of combustible materials during the summer.
Unenclosed underfloor allows sparks and embers to penetrate. Risk compounds in areas used to store timber, fire woods, or other flammable materials.
-
Cover windows and vents in fine wires.
Cracks under doors, on window ledges, windows, or along verandas are exposed to fire. Vents are common entry points for Sparks. Cover them in fine wires to prevent embers from entering walls, roof cavity areas, or windows.
-
Have a sprinkler system.
This will help stamp out embers that land around your home. Make sure it has an adequate supply of water, activation mechanism, a delivery system including pipes and heads, metal parts and fittings.
Fire emergencies can happen anytime. Preventive measures, such as installing smoke detectors and actively identifying fire hazards, will keep your precious home fire safe.
