Not all home fire alarms are created equal. They differ in price, features, and response time. In Queensland, not just any type of smoke alarm will do. The amended smoke alarm legislation has stringent requirements and schedule of implementation when it comes to the home fire alarms to install.

Here are the important requirements for home fire alarms under the new QLD rules.

  1. Photoelectric home fire alarms

The amended Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation states that effective January 1, 2017, new smoke alarms to be installed in all properties should be photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric alarms work best for smouldering or slow-flaming fires that are common in the home environment. They provide faster and earlier warning, giving residents more time to escape from the burning property.

However, just because they are photoelectric does not mean that they are compliant. Seek the help of compliance experts to ensure that photoelectric smoke alarms to use meet the specific requirements of Australian Standard 3786-2014.

  1. Power supply of home fire alarms

Properties for sale or lease (January 1, 2022) and existing properties (January 1, 2027)

For dwellings for sale or lease and existing properties, home fire alarms must be either hardwired to the 240v power supply or equipped with a non-removable 10-year lithium battery.

The gradual implementation of the legislation gives property owners of dwellings for sale or lease and existing properties until January 1, 2022, and January 1, 2027, respectively to comply with the requirements on the power supply. However, it is best to comply earlier rather than later to ensure the safety and protection of the property.

  1. Interconnected home fire alarms

Under the amended rules, all smoke alarms must be interconnected to every alarm within the dwelling. When one alarm goes, it will trigger all other alarms, as well. Interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms will give a robust warning system to residents no matter where they are on the property.
