Your home is your sanctuary. It is naturally the only place in the world that you would want to retreat to after a long day at work. But is your sanctuary a secure location for you?
Do you have the necessary smoke alarms in place to make sure it’s fire safe?
Fire can engulf everything you worked hard for in minutes – It’s a situation no one wants to face. Sadly, we hear about hundreds of house fires every year, even when there are effective ways to prevent these incidents. That’s why in Queensland, the Government has committed to implement the most comprehensive smoke alarm legislation in the country.
A small device that can save lives
When you’re asleep, you lose your sense of smell, and a smoke alarm provides you early warning and alerts you to escape your home. Can you recall the horrifying incident in Queensland in 2011 that took the lives of 10 people? If the smoke alarm triggered a warning at the right time, lives could have been saved. This just proves that much must be done to ensure that every home in our state is safe.
QLD has recently implemented very strict smoke alarm standards. It has set specific requirements on the technology of the alarms, and the timeframes of implementation depending on the use of property. Here are just some standards that you need to keep in mind:
- Only photoelectric smoke alarms can be installed when a smoke alarm is replaced or installed.
- All smoke alarms must now be either hardwired to the dwelling’s electricity supply or powered by a non-removable lithium battery with a 10-year life.
- All smoke alarms must be interconnected to every other smoke alarm installed in the dwelling.

The new standards may seem confusing, but don’t fall into the trap of following protocol just for the sake of compliance. Remember that the legislation is here to protect you, and following these standards is ultimately for your safety.
