As the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail, and when it comes to being safe, the stakes are high. In some cases, you have as little as 15 seconds to escape a fire so having a plan, wherever you are in the home, is critical to a fast exit.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have created an interactive website designed to assist you and your family in forming a Fire Safety Action Plan in the event of a fire in the home. Designed for all ages, the program asks where you are in the house and prompts you to look at safe exits and obstructions. It also presents scenarios and prompts you to plan your actions and some ideas on what those actions might be.
- You’ve woken up to a smoke alarm. How will you wake you household? Who is waking up who?
- The window is stuck, and the fire is near you. Find a heavy object in the room that could smash it.
Why not undertake the activity as a family, with discussion time to ensure everyone knows their role during an emergency. Encouraging children to think, ‘ what they would do if..’, is a great use of imagination, and one that could be a life saver.
