The Queensland Government have committed to changes bringing the state the most comprehensive smoke alarm legislation in the country.
Tragically, in the past 12 years, over 150 people have died in Queensland house fires. Many will remember the horrifying loss of life in 2011 when 11 people died in one house fire.

As of January 1, 2017, Fire and Emergency Services (Domestic Smoke Alarms) Amendment Act 2016 (QLD) will come into effect, depending on your use of the property, timeframes will vary.

 

 

Rental properties and Sales

Must comply with the new smoke alarm legislation by January 1, 2022. However, any new alarms going into a property must meet the new technology standards.

Home Owners

Must comply with the new smoke alarm legislation by January 1, 2027. However, any new alarms going into a property must meet the new technology standards.

Renovations

Substantial renovations will require you to meet the new Legislation in conjunction with the work you are undertaking.

Smoke Alarm Legislation Requirements

  • Only photoelectric smoke alarms can be installed when a smoke alarm is replaced or installed.
  • All smoke alarms must now be either hardwired to the dwelling’s electricity supply or powered by a non-removable battery with a 10-year battery life.
  • All smoke alarms must be interconnected to every other smoke alarm installed in the dwelling.
  • Each story with at least one bedroom to have a smoke alarm installed in each bedroom. If one or more of the bedrooms are connected by a door to a hallway, a smoke alarm must also be installed in the hallway.
  • Smoke alarms must be replaced within ten years of their manufacture date or if found to be faulty when tested.
  • Substantial renovation applications that are submitted on or after January 1, 2017, will require a smoke alarm to be installed in each bedroom of the dwelling
